The Maritime Alliance (TMA)  matched 23 motivated students with paid internship opportunities among its network of corporate members for 6 – 12 weeks, for 20 – 40 hours per week,  during Summer 2018.  The internship is  part of a coordinated  BlueSTEM Career Pathway in partnership with  MiraCosta College’s Technology  Career Institute and the San Diego Unified School District.

The Maritime Alliance (TMA) has received a grant to fund 23 student stipends for the first-ever BlueSTEM Internship Program for summer 2018. Interns will work with TMA member companies for 20 – 40 hours a week for 8 – 10 weeks in the San Diego region.

For background purposes, The Maritime Alliance is a nonprofit industry association whose mission is “Promoting sustainable, science-based ocean & water industries.” We believe that the way to protect the ocean is to align interests across the three major stakeholder groups of the “Triple Helix” – academia/education; industry; and policy (government, NGOs, etc.) – to pursue sustainable, science-based usage of the ocean.

The BlueSTEM Internship Program was made possible thanks to grant support from The San Diego Foundation and a collaboration with the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

The goal of this internship is to provide students with a work-based experience that will raise awareness of the jobs related to ocean and water technologies and give them hands on involvement to help solve ocean and water challenges. Interns will have a well-defined project to work on, which will be determined before or on the first day of the internship between the TMA company and the student. This will be a valuable experience for students and they will walk away with skills that they can use in the classroom as well as in their future jobs and careers.

This summer's companies hosting student interns include, Aquacycl, Assure Controls, Blue Robotics, BMT Scientific Marine Services, Clear Blue Sea, Intellecy, InterOcean Systems, Maritime Museum, MiraCosta College TCIPoseidon Water, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, SeeByte, SIDUS Solutions, Training Resources Limited, and XST.
